Verso Skincare Serum Review #1

by Jenny on 12.20.2017
“This serum has a high dose of Retinol 8 and is suitable for sensible skin.”

It is not surprising that the brand Verso is from Sweden when you see the minimalistic black and white design of the packaging. Sweden – the land where minimalistic design has been invented. The brand was established in Stockholm, 2013 by Lars Fredriksson, former marketing expert.

By the way, Verso originates from Latin and means “reverse”. Maybe this name hints in the serum’s case to reverse some signs of time? 🙂

What promises are being made?

The manufacturer promises an innovative new Retinol complex – the ‘Retinol 8’ that is said to have an 8 times greater effect than conventional Retinol.

This serum was made to stimulate the body’s own collagen production while at the same time increasing the skin’s hyaluronic acid level. These procedures shall help decreasing wrinkles and aging lines. Also, it is said to be able to reduce pigmented areas and helps the skin get a shiny look.

Sounds like the new holy grail of anti-aging skin care products, but does it really surpass the conventional Retinol, which is the first choice against wrinkles?

What is the Serum really capable of?

So, how can this product be able to be 8 times more effective than the conventional Retinol? The manufacturer describes the Retinol 8 serum as a complex of a unique Vitamin A chemical compound and Polyphenol as well as some plant extracts.

Okay, this is not helpful at all. Therefore we need to do some snooping into the depth of this product. As always just one look at the ingredients helps to clarify things.

What is in the Verso Serum?

A bit different than most of the serums, the Verso Serum is rich in its formula. It contains a great number of high-quality ingredients like fatty acids from coconut- and palm oil, lecithin, shea butter, canola oil and many more.

Many ingredients that naturally exist in our skin are also included in this serum as well. For example glycerin and squalane oil, which help the skin to keep the moisture. Ceramides help to maintain the natural protection barrier of the skin.

Okay, so far so good.

We will now take a look at the more interesting ingredients, the active agents.

Retinyl Retinoate, is it the better Retinol?

The star ingredient of this serum is definitely Retinyl Retinoate. This is a new type of chemical combination of Retinol and Retinoic Acid. Verso’s customer service says that the serum contains a 0.1% concentration of this new active agent.

The first researches to this new ingredient had promising results: a study from 2011 compared a 0.06% concentrated Retinyl Retinoate Cream with a 0.075% concentrated Retinol Cream over three months of treatment. The results show that the Retinyl Retinoate Cream has a 22% better effect than the Retinol Cream to reduce wrinkles and lessen the skin’s roughness.

At the same time the Retinyl Retinoate Cream was gentler for the skin and stimulated the skin’s own production of Hyaluronic Acid. It seems as if they found the newest anti-aging miracle cure. However, there is a downer: The number of studies for this new active agent is quite little.

Supporting antioxidants: Vitamin E and Turmeric

To complete this complex of active agents they added antioxidants such as Vitamin E and Turmeric. Vitamin E protects the skin from free radicals which originate from UV-rays and attack the skin.
The effect of Turmeric has not been studied that well yet. However, first research results are promising. Turmeric seems to have a positive effect on skin diseases and skin damages caused by light.

How does the Verso Serum feel on the skin?

The subtle yellowish serum is rather thick and rich – just like a cream. Nevertheless it still sets in fast.

The skin feels smoother and velvety soft after applying it. It is not necessary to use any additional skin care product, unless you have really dry skin. In that case I would suggest using a light moisturizer afterwards.

Also, this serum has a delicate and very light rose fragrance.

My experiences with the Verso Super Facial Serum

After many weeks of treatment I can confirm that this serum has a highly effective Retinol compound. However, in my opinion the effect of Verso’s Serum does really not differ from conventional Retinol Serums. I had really similar results after using Amara Cosmetics’ Serum which is even a lot cheaper.

But I can imagine the Verso Serum is suitable for sensitive skin types and those who are willing to pay the price of about $100.

My Conclusion

Because of many skin caring and moisturizing active agents this serum is well-suited especially for dry skin.

Another plus: This serum contains solely high-quality ingredients. Substances that are said to have a negative effect, like parabenes and mineral oil, were completely left out of it. The amount of perfume is also reduced to the minimum as it can only be found at the end of the ingredient list.

So, now I can say that this serum is suitable especially for those with sensitive skin which already had a good taste of the conventional Retinol and at the same time are still searching for a gentle alternative to the conventional Retinol.

The magic behind the new active agent complex ‘Retinol 8’ is that it mainly contains the new Retinol type ‘Retinyl Retinoate’ and is combined with Vitamin E and Turmeric. First studies say that Retinyl Retinoate is a true anti-aging miracle cure because it really has a stronger effect than Retinol and does not irritate the skin. The fact of Retinyl Retinoate being 8 times as effective as conventional Retinol has not yet been confirmed by any independent researches. That would have been too good to be true.
