Klairs Serum Review #1

by Sandra on 11.30.2017
“It’s a good anti-aging product which works best when mixed with a Hyaluronic Acid concentrate!”

Klairs is a Korean beauty brand I find quite interesting, therefore I often research if they have new products.

I found this brand for natural cosmetics after reading a review about the Midnight Blue Calming Cream. This cream has a royal-blue color because of the blue chamomile extract. Just like this cream Klairs Youth Serum is part of the “blue” product family.

For that reason I wanted to try it out really badly. And as a result I can now tell you a lot of stuff I learned from using this product. 🙂

The Youth Serum’s concept

Klairs Midnight Blue Youth Serum is an Anti-Aging Serum for your every night skin care routine. It is not only eye-catching because of its color, but also because of its great natural ingredients: a huge part of it is made of peptides.

Whoever did not hear of peptides yet needs to catch up on that topic. Peptides are actually THE must-have anti-aging agents and are essential for the fight against wrinkles. They also say they were actually able to measure the positive results achieved by peptides.

Peptides are said to be able to stimulate the creation of collagen and hereby smoothen the skin and make it look tighter. If you want to know more about peptides click here.

The Klairs Midnight Serum is made especially for younger women who are searching for their first anti-aging product. It does not have a lot of oil and has only weak hydrating active agents. Therefore it might be not ideal for mature skin which needs a more intensive skin care product.

The active agents of Youth Serum

This serum fortunately has only a short ingredient list:

RH-Oligopeptide- 1, RH-Polypeptide- 1, Butylene Glycol, Vaccinium Angustifolium (Blueberry) Fruit Extract, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Chlorphenesin, Guaiazulene, Ethylhexylglycerin, Adenosine

Besides the different peptides which are contained in high concentrations, the most interesting other agent is Guaiauzulene. This agent gives the serum its blue color which is the same ingredient that was used for the Midnight Blue Calming Cream we mentioned before.

Guaiauzulene is extracted from the blue chamomile and said to help against free radicals and therefore protects the skin from damage done by UV-rays. The blueberry extract and adenosine are very popular in the Korean anti-aging manufactories.

Also, this serum does not contain any alcohol or perfumes. I am no expert in this area but it seems like this product is a suitable for sensitive skin, because it has no irritant agents.

My experience with this product

The serum should be used in the evening after cleansing and toning your face.

Unfortunately, to be honest, this did not work well for me. This serum has a really light, watery and oil-free texture with only a small amount of castor oil. But somehow I have a problem of applying it properly on my skin.

The serum can be dosed with a pipette – drop by drop. Therefore it is easy to apply the proper amount of this elixir. With this type of skin care I normally need only a few drops. They are easy to spread and feel really good on your face.

I needed a lot more product than I’m used to for fully covering my face with the serum. The texture doesn’t have the needed viscosity for spreading it evenly on your skin. It feels as though you try to evenly spread water on your face.

At the moment it may seem as though I didn’t like the serum, but please read on, because this is not a negative review.

My solution to this problem was to mix a few drops of this serum with a hydrating serum, a cream or facial oil. The blue drops blend in really well with any possible texture and you will get a mixture that is a lot easier to spread on your skin.

So, what about the effect? I was a good girl for the last weeks and applied 3-4 drops every evening before going to bed. I made a serum mixture with a neutral Hyaluronic Acid concentrate. I did not use any other anti-aging products while using Klairs’ Serum.

After some time I noticed a slow but steady difference on my skin: it looked much fresher and noticeably glossier and tighter in the morning.

Klairs Midnight Serum: My Conclusion

I think this serum is a really good first anti-aging product for those of you that are about the end of their twenties or at the beginning of their thirties who have just started their search for anti-aging formulas. At that age you normally don’t have that many age wrinkles showing.

The effect is subtle but noticeable. And the serum is really straightforward thanks to its light formula.

Klairs seems like they are trying to tie in with The Ordinary’s success (for example with their Niacinamide Serum) though that serum is not as cheap as these cult products.

I will definitely buy Klairs Midnight Serum again. 🙂
