Kerastase Hair Oil Review #1

by Anna on 09.13.2016
“This hair oil is just the best thing to treat split ends and stressed hair.”

After reaching a certain age, I eventually realized that my hair got increasingly thinner and paler. Gone were the days when it used to be so glossy and even though I visited the hair dresser regularly my split ends seemed to get worse.

So then and there I understood the signs and that I really had to change my hair care. So I searched for new ways to up my hair care game and I finally found the Kerastase Elixir Ultime, which is a mixture of different natural oils made by a traditional manufacturer (who is now part of the L’Oreal group).

A few words about the manufacturer

Back in the days Kerastase, which is a long-established brand, was exclusively sold by well-assorted hair salons. But nowadays you can simply order any Kerastase hair care product via the internet, which seems quite practical to me.

Of course you might lack some professional input because you might not know which product will suit which hair type but then you simply have to try, instead of just relying on others. 😉

After trying out several shampoos, I found out that the expensive and exclusive hair salon products aren’t always better than the others. So in the end I went back to the drugstore shampoos because somehow I can’t justify paying that kind of money for premium products.

Sadly the variety of beauty oils for your hair is more limited than the shampoo one. So you should rather base your choice on the ingredients and see if the products have a good cost-benefit ratio.

What are the main active ingredients?

The Kerastase Elixir Ultime contains premium oils – for example Argan oil and Pracachy oil. While the Argan oil is won in Morocco, the Pracachy oil comes from the Amazonian area.

These oils, in comparison to the other ones usually used in drugstore products (especially soy bean oil and coconut oil), make the Kerastase Elixir Ultime essentially more expensive. Looking at the overall results, I believe that the surcharge is justified though.

But even more important in my opinion is how the Kerastase works and that is why I shall now tell you the details.

I have been using Kerastase Hair Oil on a daily basis for a few weeks now and I can say that this product is really worth every penny. My hair feels softer and silkier after the Hair Oil application instead of looking all strained and having those split ends. Going through it feels smoother and the end result makes me happy every time. 🙂

The right application for the Kerastase Hair Oil

Interestingly enough the Kerastase Elixir Ultime is suitable for any hair type – just find out the right dosage for your hair type and also be careful to use the right application method. There are quite a few methods to be honest:

  • Applying before washing your hair to prepare it and facilitate its cleansing.
  • Application on dry hair without washing it out which is ideal for stressed hair with split ends.
  • Applying on wet hair before blow-drying as a hair care and heat protectant. You’ll find that your hair will look silky and glossy.
  • Application as a finish hair care after blow-drying to get silkier and healthier looking hair.
  • Important: When you apply the Kerastase Elixir Ultime on dry hair, you should try out various methods until you find the right one for you – and be careful because a large amount of the product on greasy hair can rather lead to stringy looking hair, which nobody wants.

I do have to say that I tried all of the methods and the ones that got the best result on my hair were the application on dry hair and the one before blow-drying. Both led to my hair looking better and also its structure looking healthier.

Effect of the Kerastase Elixir Ultime

You don’t have to use the flat iron that much anymore, since the hair feels smoother because of the Kerastase application. Even in the morning after I get up my hair looks neater. For the best amount of hair oil: I only need a few pumps of the dispenser for every application which will make this Elixir bottle last a veeeeery long time. And that is what makes this product really efficient!

I can barely describe Kerastase Elixir Ultime’s scent. It is pleasant but has a soft fragrance of wood, being quite natural and subtle. I really like the scent of the Kerastase product because it reminds me of a spa treatment.

So compared to the drugstore products the Kerastase hair oil’s care properties are way more effective. It does cost a bit more though but it’s a justifiable price because of its efficiency and also its great effect on the hair.

And quite frankly: I don’t have to go to the hair dresser’s to get my split ends cut nor do I have to use expensive hair tonics for split ends, which saves me quite a lot of money. Finally I can let my hair grow however I like!

Are there any alternatives to the Kerastase Hair Oil?

There are actually only two alternatives to the Kerastase Elixir Ultime which in my opinion are worth mentioning:

  • Natural Moroccan Oil (*CLICK*) which is said to be great as a hair care product but also sadly more expensive than the Kerastase Hair Oil.
  • And when it comes to less expensive alternatives only one thing comes to my mind which is the Extraordinary Hair Oil by L’Oreal (*CLICK*). It is not as good of a hair care product as the others since it doesn’t contain any premium oils.

My Conclusion of the Kerastase Review

Bottom line: The Kerastase Elixir Ultime has become my favourite hair oil of all time. For me, it is the best treatment against dry and stressed hair and I am recommending it to all of my friends.

Hello, just found your review. Can you please tell if this elixir has any keratin/ protein in it?
I have been using it for the past two months, thrice a week. But over time i am noticing that my hair get drier after every use . I use it on my damp hair after shampooing and conditioning.
If it does have keratin complex, then i think long time regular use definitely dries out hair.
